Each year, thousands of brave souls across the state take the plunge to support more than 10,000 Special Olympics Wisconsin athletes. One of those brave souls is Travis.
Travis has been an athlete with Special Olympics Wisconsin for 26 years. In that time, he has been involved with softball, flag football, volleyball and basketball. Travis has also represented Special Olympics at the Second Global Athlete Conference in Panama City, Panama back in 2005. The conference brought athletes from 35 countries together to discuss competitions, fundraising, and athlete’s roles in leadership. It was at this conference that Travis met his wife, Suzie, a Special Olympics athlete from Australia! The two have been married for eight years.
If Travis’ story wasn’t impressive enough already, he also is an extremely active member in the Polar Plunge. Travis will be taking the plunge this year for the 15th year in a row!
When asked why he keeps plunging year after year, Travis said, “Honestly, every year I try and psych myself out and say I don’t want to do it, but I love the whole atmosphere of the Plunge. Every time we have done it in Manitowoc it has been at least sub-zero temperatures but I love all the volunteers, the participants that do it, and it’s a great fundraiser for SOWI.”
